CHC50121 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care

The CHC50121 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is designed for aspiring educators who are responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating early childhood education and care programs. This qualification will provide you with the skills to plan; implement and manage programs in early childhood services including long day care centres, family daycare, preschools or kindergartens. Your course will cover understanding child learning and development, culture and diversity in early childhood, and health & safety for children.

The CHC50121 Diploma of Early Childhood and Care qualification reflects the role of educators in early childhood education and care who work in regulated children’s education and care services in Australia. The qualification has 15 units of competence – 12 core and 3 electives.

How the course works

Students enrolling in this program must be working full-time or part-time in a regulated Early Childhood Education and Care Service. For those in a full-time traineeship, a minimum of 30 hours or more per week (averaged over a 4-week period) is required to be worked. A qualified trainer/assessor visits the student in the workplace every 4-6 weeks over the course of their traineeship. In addition to the face-to-face learning support, students’ progress and learning support, students will be offered assistance with their studies via phone, email or online in between workplace visits.

Practical and work-related activities designed to allow each student the opportunity to apply their learning in a real work environment are undertaken. These activities will vary, e.g. research an organisational policy and procedure, watch a colleague complete a particular task or gain experience in undertaking a particular activity. This is recorded by students and supervisors in the Daily Learning Journal. Students/trainees complete work-based activities for units relevant to this qualification. The trainer/assessor checks the Daily Learning Journal at the end of each cluster with the workplace supervisor and student and signs off to verify the on-the-job training.

Students enrolling in this program are required to attend class 1-2 days per week from 9:00am – 4:00pm. The remaining 2 days are dedicated to self-directed learning and assessment activities. Students are also required to attend 8 weeks of work experience.

This program includes training sessions and a range of interactive activities designed to build student’s underpinning knowledge and develop competence in each unit. Students will also get the opportunity to practice and apply their learning by practicing key skills such as changing a nappy, preparing formula and creating fun learning experiences for children in a safe and simulated environment.

Work Experience
Classroom students participate in Work Experience. This provides students with opportunities to:

  • Practice newly learnt skills and apply theory learnt in the classroom.

  • Build the skills that employers want like teamwork, communication and reliability.

  • Increase confidence and show individuals they are ready for work.


Benchmark College will organise work experience for all classroom-based students and will provide insurance and support in the workplace. Students will be buddied with an experienced employee and will be visited at least once by a Trainer. Students on work experience are given a range of activities to guide their learning and practice the key skills required to become work ready.

Students are also required to complete 2, fifteen-day work experience blocks – Monday to Friday – 30 hours per week. Start and finish times may vary depending on the early childhood service.

Students must provide & wear sun safe, industry appropriate clothing & a hat and be able to travel to the host employer.

Self-directed learning and assessment activities – All students
Self-directed learning activities may vary from reading learner guides to online research. Workplace-based/ traineeship students can expect to dedicate approximately 8-10 hours per week to self-directed learning and assessment task completion; or approximately 14hrs (2 days) per week for classroom-based students.

To ensure that students are safe and work ready, they will need to complete a range of assessment tasks that include answering questions, analysing case studies and completing practical work-based tasks. Trainers will also observe students perform a range of skills in the workplace and in the classroom, and on work experience for classroom-based students.

Course pre-requisites and suitability
The student must be completed the Certificate III in Early Childhood. 

Can I get credit for previous study?
If students have previously completed a Nationally Recognised Qualification or Course, please talk to our Recruitment or Administration team and by completing the relevant Verification and Consent Form and providing a transcript of what you have attained. We would see if any units listed in the transcript can be credited towards your chosen qualification.

Fees and charges
Students eligible for a concession are required to pay $240.  Fee for service $6000. This fee covers enrolment, tuition and learning resources. Fees must be paid in accordance with the Fee Schedule.
